These tips only apply to buying printer ink for ink jet printers. Laser printers and dot matrix printers require different types of ink and will be covered in another post. The following tips should save you money when buying ink for your ink jet.
Buying Bulk Printer Ink Online
Do yourself a favor and consider buying your ink online. In doing so you can save money by finding online sellers that offer wholesale print services. This will allow you to compare prices from various dealers so you can get the best price. An added bonus is the fact that you can have your ink shipped directly to your door. Many of the traders online offer free shipping for their products for orders over $50 dollars in most cases. If you buy in bulk you can negotiate a better price with your trader. Buying in bulk is considerably cheaper than buying retail.
Reduce Wasted Ink
Be more economical when using your printer. How many times do you waste ink printing out pages that are never used? Only print the final copy. Often times in the office, school or at home, we print stuff that we do not even use later on. Cut on waste and see how much you can save. You can also try to proof your copies and routinely check for errors in design or layout so as to ensure that the number of reprints are to a minimum.
Which ink type should you use for your printer?

Original Equipment Manufactured Printer Ink
First is the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) ink. This is expensive and is designed to work with specific printer models. In most cases the ink is produced by the printer manufacturer. If cost is not a concern then OEM ink provides the best quality printing and will have the best color of any ink available. OEM ink is very reliable and often comes with a warranty.
Compatible Printer Inks
If you are on a shoestring budget then consider using compatible inks. These inks comply with OEM printing standards and are also designed for specific printer brands. In reality these inks are a cheap copy of the OEM inks however most do not offer a warranty and the quality can be poorer depending on the source.
Re-Manufactured Printer Inks
Re-manufactured printer ink is just afancy way of saying the ink is recycled. This is the cheapest alternative for buying ink for your printer but you should be aware that the ink has no warranty and can be of poorer quality and is unreliable at times.
When choosing ink be sure to find an ink that is compatible with your printer. Check the packaging and instruction manual for your printer to see if the ink that you are planning to buy is compatible with the equipment. Buying OEM inks is always the best bet but you can still look at re-manufactured inks if money is a concern. You won’t get the brighter hues and best quality but depending on your jobs this may not be a major factor in your printing needs.
